Keywords:

LABORATORY ANIMALS BURN THERMAL INJURY RADIO FREQUENCY RADIATION MILLIMETER WAVE MICROWAVE

Objective:

This protocol seeks to determine threshold levels of exposure to radio frequency radiation (RFR) of millimeter wavelength (MMW) sufficient to produce thermal injury in both juvenile and adult rodents. The depth of penetration of 94-GHz RFR has been calculated to be approximately 0.3 mm, meaning that most of the MMW energy absorbed in animals will occur in the cutaneous region. This level of energy deposition may make the traditional thermal injury literature not relevant to predicting the time vs. duration function for thermal injury.

Approach:

The DoD is currently operating and developing millimeter wave systems. Knowledge of the potential bioeffects of exposure to these emerging systems is essential to the protection of DoD personnel. In the experiments proposed in this protocol, animals will be exposed to continuous wave millimeter wave energy under far field conditions to learn the amount of energy vs. time to produce various levels of thermal injury to the skin.

Rats, mice, birds, amphibians and other animals have been excluded from coverage by the Animal Welfare Act. Therefore research facility reports do not include these animals. As a result of this situation, a blank report, or one with few animals listed, does not mean that a facility has not performed experiments on non-reportable animals. A blank form does mean that the facility in question has not used covered animals (primates, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, pigs, sheep, goats, etc.). Rats and mice alone are believed to comprise over 90% of the animals used in experimentation. Therefore the majority of animals used at research facilities are not even counted.
