Negligence at Colorado lab kills rabbits and denies care to dogs & cats; Research Watchdog Files Complaint, Calls for Fine, Releases federal records & Photos

FORT COLLINS, CO  – National Research Watchdog Organization SAEN (Stop Animal Exploitation NOW), has filed an Official Complaint against Red Beast Enterprises of Fort Collins for multiple violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

A scathing 6 page USDA inspection report, dated 12/10/13, reveals multiple serious violations of the Animal Welfare Act.  2 rabbits actually died during the inspection as part of botched surgical procedures.  Other rabbits were observed by inspectors to be experiencing unrelieved pain.

Additionally, one dog was observed to be lame and other animals including dogs cats and rabbits were in need of veterinary care.  The lab was also cited for the use of expired medications, and improper enclosures.

Red Beast Enterprises was fined $1,714 by the USDA for previous Animal Welfare Act violations in 2011.

SAEN has demanded that the USDA levy the largest penalty allowable under the law against Red Beast, $10,000 per infraction, or $60,000.

"Repeated Negligence at this facility has killed animals and caused real suffering to others," said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN.  "This lab deserves the most severe penalty that the law allows."

The USDA reports, as well as photos from within the lab, and SAEN's Official Complaint are available upon request from SAEN.
