Wake Forest Negligence kills 2 Monkeys; Watchdog Group files Complaint &
Calls for $20,000 Federal Fine
WINSTON SALEM,NC – Sensitive federal records that reveal two
preventable monkey deaths at Wake Forest University are being made
public by a national research watchdog organization today.
The Wake Forest University lab should be heavily fined - $20,000, said
SAEN (Stop Animal Exploitation NOW), a national research watchdog
organization, which uncovered the death & negligence. SAEN has
filed a federal complaint with the USDA, which oversees research
laboratories.
SAEN said the records reveal that a monkey strangled to death after
becoming entangled in an enrichment device. A second monkey, who
was diabetic, apparently died after becoming hypoglycemic when lab staff
failed to provide an afternoon meal.
“Wake Forest University has demonstrated a clear pattern of incompetence
that has killed two monkeys," said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive
Director, SAEN. "This bungling lab deserves the maximum penalty
allowable under the law."
Wake Forest University recently paid a $35,464 fine for multiple
violations of the Animal Welfare Act.
The NIH reports and SAEN's Official Complaint are available upon request
from SAEN.
