Watchdog Group Complaint targets U of Idaho for Negligent animal
death;
Calls for Federal Investigation and Fine
MOSCOW, ID – A National Research Watchdog Group, SAEN, has filed a federal complaint against the University of Idaho for multiple violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act, and is calling for a federal investigation and a significant fine.
A recent USDA inspection report dated 8/23/13 cites the University of
Idaho for seven non-compliances with the Animal Welfare Act, the second
largest total of infractions in an inspection for any US lab during
2013. Chief among the violations was failure to euthanize an
animal in a timely manner, allowing a sheep to endure a potentially
painful death.
The remaining violations in the USDA inspection included a second
infraction for inadequate veterinary care, as well as other
non-compliances by the lab's animal care committee, inadequate
sanitation, inaccurate reporting of painful experiments, and improperly
providing water to animals.
“Negligence at the University of Idaho caused at least one animal to
unnecessarily suffer a painful death,” said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T.,
Executive Director, SAEN. “Serious animal abuse like this
must not go unpunished.”
The USDA inspection report and relevant documentation is available upon
request from SAEN.
