Feds Cite Methodist Research Institute of IU in Dog Death; Watchdog Group files Official Complaint, Demands Fine

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Recently obtained federal reports reveal that negligence at the Methodist Research Institute of IU has killed one dog, and caused severe pain to another, leading to seven violations of federal law.

A USDA report dated 3/1/12 recounts an incident in which a dog died during a surgical procedure at the Methodist Research Institute of IU due to negligence.  The scathing four page report which recounts this incident reveals six other violations, several of which center around a dog who experienced so much pain he/she was unable to eat after receiving less than half the prescribed dose of pain medication.

According to the USDA report this laboratory killed one dog through negligence, allowed another to unnecessarily experience severe pain, improperly constructed research protocols, failed to look for alternatives, and staff are afraid to report animal welfare issues.

“The negligence at the Methodist Research Institute cost one dog to die and forced another to experience excruciating pain,” said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN.  “This facility should pay the most severe penalty allowable under federal law.”

SAEN has contacted the Eastern Regional Office of USDA/APHIS/AC to demand that a fine be issued against the Methodist Research Institute of Indiana University.

All USDA reports are available upon request from SAEN.
