33 Animals killed as negligence epidemic sweeps US; Primates, Dogs, Cats and Rabbits, cooked alive, bleed to death, etc.

WASHINGTON, DC – Federal reports reveal that a laboratory negligence epidemic is sweeping across the U.S. SAEN, a national research watchdog organization, has obtained federal reports during early 2012 revealing that eleven labs in ten states have been cited/fined for violations of the Animal Welfare Act which killed over thirty-three animals.

The recent dehydration deaths of two primates at Harvard’s Primate Research Center have made national news, leading to the resignation of the Primate Center’s director and a halt to new primate experimentation at the center. But Harvard is by no means the only culprit.

A recently obtained federal report reveals that a mechanical failure at the Southwest Bio-labs facility (Las Cruces, NM) caused the temperature to rise so abruptly that ten cats were literally cooked alive.

The USDA announced in February that the Texas Biomedical Research Institute paid a $25,714 fine for the death of a juvenile rhesus monkey who spent the night outside in subfreezing temperatures.

The Affinergy Corporation of Durham (NC) has been cited for federal violations in the deaths of eight rabbits due to inadequate veterinary care.

The Ricerca Biosciences LLC Corporation of Concord (OH) killed two animals negligently during toxicity testing, drowning a monkey in toxic chemicals and allowing a dog to die overnight without pain relief.

A USDA report reveals that 3 dogs died at the Care Research facility (Fort Collins, CO) after a watering system malfunction.

A USDA inspection report for the Covance Laboratories (Madison, WI) facility reveals that a primate became entangled in an “enrichment device” and died, possibly by strangulation.

The Bristol Myers facility in Pennington (NJ) boiled a monkey alive in a cage washer.

The USDA has issued a scathing five page report citing the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, a Harvard affiliated teaching hospital, for the exsanguination deaths of multiple rabbits during craniotomies.

The USDA has issued an ‘OfficialWarning’ against Oregon State University for Animal Welfare Act violations connected to the deaths of three rabbits.

Rockefeller University (NY) was recently cited for the death of a primate due to an improper collar.

SAEN has filed additional complaints against these criminal facilities insisting on USDA fines (excluding the Texas Biomedical Research Institute).

“When animals die this horribly, the USDA must take action,” said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN. “Murdering monkeys, dogs, cats, and rabbits by dehydration, cooking them alive, exsanguination, or inadequate veterinary care must NOT go unpunished. These heinous labs deserve federal fines at the very least.”

All USDA reports are available upon request from SAEN.
