Five Worst U.S. Primate Laboratories as of October 2011

Watchdog Group Names ‘Worst Primate Labs’ in US; Research Industry rocked by negligent deaths & abuse

WASHINGTON, DC – Five infamous U.S. labs have been named the “Worst Primate Labs’ in the United States.

Harvard, Princeton, University of Louisiana (Lafayette – ULL), Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU), and University of Washington have been singled out as the worst of the worst.

University of Louisiana, Lafayette (ULL) has been crowned as the worst primate lab in the U.S. Cited this year for losing three primates in a transfer chute, who later died, the facility has been stunned by recent allegations from a whistleblower. ULL also excludes 869 primates from protection by Animal Welfare Act regulations.

Harvard Medical School places second on the worst list for negligently killing two primates within just over a year, receiving an ‘Official Warning’ from the USDA for Animal Welfare Act violations, and exempting 1033 primates from protection by Animal Welfare Act regulations.

Three labs tied for third, University of Washington, Oregon Health Sciences University, and Princeton University.

The University of Washington, Seattle (UW) has recently been fined $10,893 for killing three primates through negligence and exempts 65 primates from protection by Animal Welfare Act regulations.

Princeton University has been issued an “Official Warning’ by the USDA, exempts 92% of their primates from protection by Animal Welfare Act regulations, has had one primate escape, and has been shocked by recent whistleblower revelations including horrifying photos of decapitated primates.

OHSU has just been singled out by a whistleblower for continuing to perform electro-ejaculation in primates, and using barren primate enclosures. OHSU also has two USDA investigation cases open, and has been cited for one primate escape.

Just behind the leaders were Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute (fined $21,750 for primate suffocation death), Emory University (exempts 1835 primates from protection by Animal Welfare Act regulations), the Southern Research Institute (killed 1 primate negligently and uses 76 primates in painful experiments without anesthesia) and the Weill Medical College of Cornel University (received Official Warning for negligent death of a primate).
