Santa Cruz biotech lab firm targeted; Research watchdog group says it has evidence of massive federal violations, photos of sick animals

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- Santa Cruz animal research scientists have been the target of protests here in recent years, and now a nonprofit, national research watchdog group will make public insider photographs and pages of federal violations by a controversial Santa Cruz biotech facility at a news conference here Monday.

The news conference will be held MONDAY, April 18, at 10 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Express (1410 Ocean St., meeting room).

Santa Cruz Biotech, according to government documents (11 pages in just one year) is responsible for more than 170 sick animals during last federal inspection, said SAEN, an Ohio-based research monitor that has been responsible for closing some experiments down because of federal law violations.

"Some animals literally at Santa Cruz Biotech look like skin and bones, others are unable to walk. And one has a tumor the size of a baseball. It is horrific, and evidence of massive federal law violations," said Michael Budkie, executive director of SAEN. He will be at the news conference Monday.
