National Watchdog Organization Questions Source of Cleveland Clinic Dogs; Demands Federal Investigation For Immediate Release Cleveland, OH SAEN, a national research watchdog organization based
in Ohio, announced today that it has requested a federal investigation
of the sources, identification, and veterinary care of dogs used at the
Cleveland Clinic.
Documents from the Cleveland Clinic clearly discuss the use of
mongrel dogs, said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., SAENs Executive
Director. Very often this term is a euphemism for dogs that have come
from animal shelters. The Associated Press has reported that the Cleveland Clinic informed
the USDA of an unapproved protocol where a neurosurgeon had induced a
brain aneurysm in a dog to demonstrate a medical device Wednesday to a
group of 20 to 25 salespeople. It would be the cruelest blow of all if the dog so callously
murdered was the former pet of some unknowing resident of the Cleveland
Metropolitan area, added Budkie. The public has a right to know the
source of this poor dog who died so needlessly. Random source or pound dogs often suffer from bacterial infections as
a result of shipping stress requiring substantial veterinary care. Additionally, these animals tend to be very poor research subjects as a
result of their unknown medical history which can render dogs totally
inappropriate for many of the highly invasive cardio-thoracic and
neurological procedures performed at the Cleveland Clinic. Correspondence sent to the USDA by SAEN as requested an examination
of all documentation relevant to dogs at the Cleveland Clinic including
identification and health care records. -30-
