DOD Funding of Animal Cruelty 2005: Evaluation of the
Reproductive Toxicity and Teratogenicity of Sodium Tungstate in the Rat
(Rattus norvegicus)
Title: Evaluation of the Reproductive Toxicity and Teratogenicity
of Sodium Tungstate in the Rat (Rattus norvegicus)
Research Category:
FY: 2005 Funding (in dollars): 111,000
Responsible Organization: AIR FORCE RESEARCH LAB/WRIGHT
PATTERSON
Primary Contact: See Responsible Organization Information
City: Wright-Patterson AFB
State: OH
Zip: 45433-7902
Keywords: LABORATORY ANIMALS SODIUM TUNGSTATE REPRODUCTIVE
TOXICOLOGY RODENTS DEVELOPMENTAL
Objective: The objective of the proposed study is to determine
the effect of sodium tungstate exposure on male and female rat
reproduction and neurobehavior, and pup development and neurobehavior.
Information gained in this study will be used for characterizing
possible human health risks associated with oral exposure to
tungsten-contaminated food and water sources from military activities
and chronic intake of tungsten-containing anti diuretic drugs.
Approach: The reproductive toxicity of orally administered
tungsten was investigated. Female and male test subjects were orally
dosed with 125 mg/(kg day), 62.5 mg/(kg day) or 5 mg/(kg day) of sodium
tungstate or dH2O (n=40/(sex group) for 70 consecutive days. The test
subjects were mated after 14 days and dosing continued through pregnancy
up to post-natal day (PND) 21. The gestational effects of oral sodium
tungstate as well as early growth and development of the offspring were
measured.

Rats, mice, birds, amphibians and other animals have
been excluded from coverage by the Animal Welfare Act. Therefore research
facility reports do not include these animals. As a result of this
situation, a blank report, or one with few animals listed, does not mean
that a facility has not performed experiments on non-reportable animals. A
blank form does mean that the facility in question has not used covered
animals (primates, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, pigs,
sheep, goats, etc.). Rats and mice alone are believed to comprise over 90%
of the animals used in experimentation. Therefore the majority of animals
used at research facilities are not even counted. |
