DOD Funding of Animal Cruelty 2005: Evaluation of Barrier Skin Creams to Chemical Irritants in New Zealand White Rabbits (Ortyctolagus cuniculi)

Title: Evaluation of Barrier Skin Creams to Chemical Irritants in New Zealand White Rabbits (Ortyctolagus cuniculi)

Research Category:

FY: 2005 Funding (in dollars): 350,000

Responsible Organization: AIR FORCE RESEARCH LAB/WRIGHT PATTERSON
Primary Contact: See Responsible Organization Information
City: Wright-Patterson AFB
State: OH
Zip: 45433-7902

Keywords: LABORATORY ANIMALS PAIN DERMAL EXPOSURE SKIN EXPOSURE SKIN IRRITATION ALTERNATIVE KERSOSEN JET FUEL JP -8 IRRITATION TOXICOLOGY SKIN EPIDERMIS BARRIER CREAM SKIN CREAM SKIN PROTECTION LOTION GEL

Objective: The objective is to find the best barrier creams to JP-8 irritation. JP-8 penetration rates in the silastic membrane and harvested pig skin with the degree of irritation caused by JP-8 in rabbits will be used to determine how best to use in vitro models. Once the evaluation of the barrier cream?s protection against JP-8 irritation has been performed, these results from JP-8 testing studies will be used to determine if any over the counter creams can be recommended as a barrier against JP-8.

Approach: Test OTC and Novel Barrier Creams for use as protection against JP-8. Expose one rabbit to JP-8 at a minimum of 8 sites. Testing each cream previously identified as offering protection against JP-8 during In Vitro testing. Four rabbits per cream were needed for the study.

Rats, mice, birds, amphibians and other animals have been excluded from coverage by the Animal Welfare Act. Therefore research facility reports do not include these animals. As a result of this situation, a blank report, or one with few animals listed, does not mean that a facility has not performed experiments on non-reportable animals. A blank form does mean that the facility in question has not used covered animals (primates, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, pigs, sheep, goats, etc.). Rats and mice alone are believed to comprise over 90% of the animals used in experimentation. Therefore the majority of animals used at research facilities are not even counted.
