A watchdog group has filed a complaint accusing Purdue University staff
of illegally killing animals in a study.
It's an Ohio-based watchdog group called SAEN, which stands for Stop Animal
Exploitation NOW! The group has filed a complaint with the U.S. Department
of Agriculture against Purdue.
The group is urging a maximum penalty of $10,000 per infraction, per animal.
According to the group's press release, the complaint calls for citations
for failure to follow approved protocol.
The group claims that a pig died during a surgery and 15 hamsters died
unexpectedly.
A Purdue spokesperson, Brian Zink, released this statement to News 18
Tuesday:
"The university regrets these incidents occurred and is committed to the
well-being and humane care of any animals involved in research as they play
a critical role in advancing scientific discoveries that benefit human and
animal health. Purdue was fully transparent in reporting the procedural
violations, and our internal Animal Care and Use Committee took appropriate
steps to ensure there would be no recurrence of similar incidents. With
regard to the incidents in question, the NIH’s Office of Laboratory Animal
Welfare issued its determination that it concurred with the measures put in
place by Purdue and that those measures were consistent with the Public
Health Service policy related to the humane care and use of laboratory
animals."
