Watchdog Group Files Complaint Against UF for Negligent Animal Deaths

From WCJB.com, Monday, September 15, 2014

GAINESVILLE---A watchdog group has filed a complaint against the University of Florida for failing to provide adequate care to their animals in research labs.

"Stop Animal Exploitation NOW" or SAEN says they have federal documents that prove that UF veterinary technicians starved animals to death, including a newborn puppy.

One technician was suspended and a researcher resigned in 2013.

SAEN says this was among a series of mistakes that led to dozens of negligent animal deaths in UF's research laboratories.

UF did release a statement addressing this complaint Monday, saying they reported these incidents to appropriate regulatory agencies as required by law.

One of the cases dates back to 2011.

UF added they have taken measures to prevent this from happening again by updating protocols, providing additional training and disciplining students.

UF's animal care and use program has been accredited since 1966.
