KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Animal rights activists are hoping a silent protest over the weekend made their message heard to the University of Kansas.

The group gathered on Sunday at 39th Street and State Line Road outside the University of Kansas Medical Center. The organizers called it a national day of mourning for animals used in laboratories. The group said it targeted the medical center because of its federal citations in 2008 and 2009, along with a complaint a watchdog group filed with the United States Department of Agriculture.

"It's the kind of thing that does not need to happen, and this is a waste of tax payer money," said animal rights activist Michael Budkie. "And it's extremely cruel to these animals."

The KU Med Center responded to the complaint, restating its commitment to ensure, "all of its animal care and use programs are in full compliance with the United States Department of Agriculture regulations.".
