UL Primate Center Accusations

The UL New Iberia Primate Research lab is once again being inspected carefully after the co-founder of Stop Animal Exploitation Now filed another complaint claiming neglect of primates.

TV10 reported Monday night; federal charges had been filed against the lab. However, we now know it is only a complaint that the USDA says they are looking into.

Michael Budkie told us in a press conference Tuesday he filed the complaint with the USDA last week.

After a Nightline special on primate abuse at the lab aired back in March, the USDA inspected the lab and cleared it of any wrong doing in relation to neglect leading to the deaths of primates.

But now Budkie said he comes with more data and more research on at least 1500 other primates, many of which he claims were neglected.

UL also released a statement saying quote; "Budkie routinely and frequently alleges animal welfare violations at universities and other research facilities around the country."

The university takes seriously any allegation of animal mistreatment. A subcommittee will meet to review the records of animals cited by Budkie in his latest letter to the USDA."

Meanwhile, the USDA tells us they will conduct an inspection in the near future.
