Ag officials investigate incident in UW primate facility

By Brian Bull
Tuesday, May 26, 2009

(MADISON) The USDA has cited the UW-Madison for violating federal animal welfare regulations. The action stems from a 2007 incident at the Research Animal Resources Center, where a research monkey escaped its cage and attacked two others in their own cages.

One monkey suffered a laceration to its hand, while another had to have a finger amputated.

Michael Budkie is with Stop Animal Exploitation Now or SAEN, the group that filed the complaint against the UW-Madison:

Unfortunately the only actual punishment theyre going to receive is the paper citation, says Budkie, Two things should happen. Number one, they should receive the largest fine thats allowable by law, and Number two, since these animals have been severely injured due to the negligence of the University of Wisconsin, they should be placed in a sanctuary.

But Eric Sandgren, director of the Research Animal Resources Center, says the centers staff cares a lot about their animals, and has taken steps to prevent further incidents. He says in this case, the monkey had simply figured out how to unlatch its cage. Thats since been fixed with a lock.

Sandgren says the USDAs inspection, and his staff improving on its feedback, show that regulation of animal facilities works.
