Letter from Justin Goodman - 14 Dec 2006

Hello all,

I just returned from viewing the last round of documents at the UCHC.

Since March, which is the last time I had a record of the USDA going in there, there have been 3 subsequent visits--all resulting in repeated and new citations for violations (more than 10 new ones in 9 months). These led to the USDA barring Waitzman from publishing any of the data he collected since March, as well as the submission of letters of reprimand to Waitzman from the USDA, US Health and Human Services, NIH, OLAW and National Eye Institute. In addition, the UCHC IACUC has been riding Waitzman and his staff all year (adding insult to injury, a vet tech at the facility submitted an anonymous letter of complaint to the IACUC about William Loftus' rough handling of NHPs) and amidst all of this pressure, he decided to 'voluntarily' terminate both of his experiments-- the only two experiments involving NHPs at UConn. The school, from what they reported to me today, has no plans of pursuing any new NHP work.

On a sadder note, of the two monkeys who were left there as of March, one, Lips, was euthanized (they were performing unapproved procedures on him and he ended up basically paralyzed on his left side) and Mowgli (still unoperated on) was transferred to the U of Mississippi Health Center. My next project is trying to get him back from them and released to sanctuary. If you've engaged in similar campaigns elsewhere, your input would be much appreciated.

I should have copies all of the supporting documents for this by the beginning of the new year at which time I'll release a formal report to all of you and to the media. I just wanted to share the news and thank you for your unending support.

At any rate, Waitzman quit the monkey business.

For animals,

Justin

Rats, mice, birds, amphibians and other animals have been excluded from coverage by the Animal Welfare Act. Therefore research facility reports do not include these animals. As a result of this situation, a blank report, or one with few animals listed, does not mean that a facility has not performed experiments on non-reportable animals. A blank form does mean that the facility in question has not used covered animals (primates, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, pigs, sheep, goats, etc.). Rats and mice alone are believed to comprise over 90% of the animals used in experimentation. Therefore the majority of animals used at research facilities are not even counted.
